How to Style Denim

Morning! Welcome to my first blog post. ‍

Being a costume designer, one of the main questions I get asked (on almost a weekly basis) is wether or not an outfit looks "good" or is "stylish." This is such a personal question because everyone has different ideas of what constitutes “style” and fashion can look different on different people!

A few years ago, I had a dream of providing simple styling tips for friends, family and anyone who loves fashion to be able to access top tips - regardless of your shopping price range.

I decided to make the first of this series a set of tips for styling one of my most worn and favourite articles of clothing -denim! From my favourite pair of jeans, shorts, skirts and more, keep reading to see my most loved items and how I'd suggest for you to style similar items from your own closet…

I also have provided some affordable options for anyone looking to achieve a similar look at a slightly more affordable price point. (And let’s be real…who doesn’t love a good Zara moment?)

  1. Denim jeans

I love love love denim, especially pairs that are so comfortable you rotate and wear them every day of the week. One of my favourite brands in the past few years is Nili Lotan.

This Israeli-American designer is known for her timeless, seamless and luxurious designs. I am a frequent visitor of the Tribeca, NYC shop, constantly popping in and wanting to purchase every pair!

Here are a few of my most worn styles, along with how I’d style them..

2. Denim jean skirt

There’s nothing better than dressing up an everyday staple like denim and making it look elevated. A great way to achieve this is with the denim skirt. The beauty of this adaptation is that you can dress it up or down and take it from day to night, almost effortlessly!

I’ve noticed that Zara comes out with new iterations of the jean skirt almost every summer, giving you plenty of inspiration at a price that won’t break your bank.

3. Denim shorts

With summer’s current temperatures hitting 110 degrees this week, (phew!) there’s nothing I love more than a great pair of cut offs. Another versatile item, you can run errands in these in the morning, then hit the beach in the afternoon.

Another hit from Nililotan, the XXX

A Golde make a great pair that get tons of compliments! From the cut to the wash and even the pocket details, they are just perfect!

On the more affordable side, I’m loving the shorts that And Other Stories are putting out this season…

4. Denim shirts

Another way to elevate denim shorts is to simply pair them with a nicely tailored, button-down denim shirt! The Canadian tuxedo is always appropriate in my book.

5. Denim Accessories

A commonly overlooked but cool way to incorporate denim into your wardrobe is by adding in a touch of denim here and there, such as adding a pair of denim sandals or a chic headband. All you need is a touch!

I love the way denim sandals can either relax or elevate a summer dress and bring out the existing colours.

Take for example the denim version of these classic Hermes Oran sandals..

Adding the heeled version is a perfect way to elevate a sundress for brunch with the girls.

Other chic accessories include these headbands from Anthropology. Just a tiny pop of denim is all you need to break up a monotone outfit or add a pop of colour to an all - white outfit.

Another idea is to incorporate a denim trucker hat! I’m. A huge fan of these Von Dutch ones, I love wearing them in upstate NY to the farmer’s market on a hot day to cool me down while taking a casual look up a notch (+ plenty of SPF)!
